Men in the UK die earlier than women, are less likely to go to a GP, and are more likely to leave a symptom alone until it becomes urgent. None of that is news, and it has been fairly stable for decades, which is itself the interesting part.
Men’s Health Week exists to push at that, and June is a sensible time for it, because it lands nowhere near the November cluster and catches men when the weather is actually good enough to go and do something.
We do not really separate them, and we would gently suggest nobody else should either. The men who come on our hikes are getting eight miles of exercise and four hours of company in the same afternoon, and it would be strange to try to work out which half did them good.
The reverse holds as well. A man who has stopped leaving the house is usually not sleeping properly, not eating properly and not moving, and no amount of talking fixes that on its own.
The version that works is not complicated. Book the appointment you have been putting off. Get someone else to book theirs. Move for an hour with other people rather than alone, which is a materially different experience even though the exercise is identical.
If you want to do something in June with us, our walks and gym sessions run right through the summer and are free to any man.
It runs in June, in the week leading up to Father’s Day, so the exact dates shift each year.
Men’s physical and mental health, and the gap in outcomes between men and women. Common themes include getting checked earlier, heart health, and men’s reluctance to see a GP.
Men’s Health Week is in June and focuses on health specifically. International Men’s Day is 19 November and covers a broader set of themes including role models and fatherhood.
Book the check up you have been avoiding, and get a mate to do the same. Beyond that, come to something. Our walks and gym sessions run through the summer and are free.
