This is more confusing than it needs to be. In the UK, November is when men’s mental health gets sustained attention, driven by Movember through the whole month and International Men’s Day on the 19th. In the United States, June is often called Men’s Mental Health Month, and Men’s Health Week in the UK sits in June too, in the week leading up to Father’s Day.
So you will find both dates quoted, and neither is wrong. The date matters a good deal less than what happens on the other eleven months.
Men are markedly less likely than women to access talking therapy, more likely to reach services at the point of crisis rather than before it, and far more likely to die by suicide. Suicide is the leading cause of death for men under fifty in the UK.
The usual explanation is that men will not talk. We think that is close, but not quite it. In our experience men will talk, at length and with real honesty, but not on demand, not to a stranger in a clinical room, and rarely as the stated purpose of the meeting. Put the same man on a five mile walk, or opposite a chessboard, and it comes out on its own.
Awareness is not the bottleneck any more. Most men now know that talking is supposed to help. What they are short of is somewhere to go on an ordinary Tuesday where other men are, that costs nothing, that does not require a referral, and that they will not feel like an idiot for turning up to.
That is a much duller problem than awareness, and much more solvable. It is the entire thing we do.
November is a heavy month for a lot of men. Dark by four, a year winding down, and the run up to Christmas doing whatever it does to you.
If you are struggling, you can come to anything we run without explaining yourself to anyone. If you need help sooner than that, our Quiet Room page lists the places to ring, including the ones open through the night.
In the UK it is marked in November, alongside Movember and International Men’s Day on 19 November. In the United States it is often marked in June. Both dates are in common use.
Movember is a specific charity campaign running through November, best known for moustache growing and fundraising for men’s health. Men’s Mental Health Month is the broader awareness period around it.
Men’s Health Week runs in June, in the week leading up to Father’s Day. It covers physical as well as mental health.
Our Quiet Room page lists free helplines including ones open twenty four hours. If you are in immediate danger, call 999. You are also welcome at any of our meetups without needing to explain why you came.
We run free meetups for men across Manchester and Wolverhampton every week. No referral, no cost, and you do not have to talk about anything you do not want to.
You don't need to prove anything, have it all figured out, or bring the right gear. Just turn up. Whether you're going through something heavy or you just want to connect with other men, there's space for you here. We run free activities every week across Manchester and Wolverhampton, talking circles, hikes, football, workshops, all of it. No barriers, no judgement, no forms to fill. Just brotherhood and a brew.
