Where to walk

Best Walks Near Manchester.

Eighteen green spaces we walk regularly, all within reach of the city, all mapped with directions. Some are a tram ride away, some are worth a whole morning.

Free · No referral needed · Open to any man over 18

Manchester has more accessible green space than it gets credit for. Between the Mersey valley, the old railway lines turned into green corridors and the moorland edges out towards Bolton and Oldham, you can be somewhere that feels genuinely rural inside forty minutes without a car.

We mapped these for our foraging work, which means each one comes with notes on what actually grows there through the year. You do not have to care about that in the slightest. They are simply good walks, and the notes are there if you want them.

How to pick one

If you have never done this before, start with Chorlton Water Park or Fletcher Moss. Both are easy to reach, well used, and you will never feel like you have wandered somewhere you should not be.

If you want something bigger, Entwistle Reservoir out past Bolton gives you moorland and open sky, which does a different job entirely. Roe Green Loopline is completely flat the whole way, so it is the one to pick if you are bringing someone who needs that.

Questions

The Usual Ones

Are these walks free?

Yes. Every location listed is publicly accessible green space, free to walk in. Some have paid car parks.

Can I get to them without a car?

Most of them, yes. The Mersey valley sites and the old loopline routes are reachable by tram or bus from central Manchester. The moorland sites out towards Bolton are easier with a car.

Can I join a group walk instead of going alone?

Yes. We run free walks most weeks across Greater Manchester, open to any man, with no referral needed. The dates are on our What is Happening page.

Is it legal to forage on these sites?

Picking small amounts of fruit, flowers, fungi and foliage for your own use is generally permitted in England and Wales, but rules differ by site and uprooting any plant without permission is not allowed. Take a little, leave plenty, and never eat anything you cannot identify with certainty.
